Her good-natured mood instantly set the tone. This performance would be an intimate gathering of friends, not unlike the Joni Jams she’d been hosting in her own living room over the last few years of recovery. Smiling broadly, Mitchell made her surprise appearance, taking her on-stage seat alongside Carlile.
Within minutes, the news had rocketed around the globe. Mitchell was back, sparkling with enthusiasm, delivering a tender and passionate set of 13 songs, ending with a joyful sing-along of ‘The Circle Game.’” - Cameron Crowe

Joni stunned the Newport Folk Festival audience last summer when she gave a surprise performance – her first in 20 years – delivering a heartfelt set filled with some of her greatest songs. We're pleased to announce that her triumphant return will be available as AT NEWPORT on July 28th. Along with Joni, it’s been produced by close collaborator Brandi Carlile, and features new liner notes by Cameron Crowe.

Joni was joined on stage at the Newport Folk Festival by a star-studded band led by Carlile, the 9x GRAMMY®-winning singer/songwriter. Other performers included Carlile’s bandmates Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and more.

She delighted the audience, blending her voice with the other singers on stage on classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.” For good measure, she even flashed her guitar prowess, playing a solo instrumental version of “Just Like This Train.”

Both Sides Now from Joni Jam at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0911/5988/8175/files/JoniMitchell_AtNewport_2LP_ProductShot_Black.jpg?v=1734964891
the-asylum-albums-1972-1975-4cd-1
The Asylum Albums (1972-1975) [4CD]

Joni Mitchell was at a turning point 50 years ago. After making four acclaimed albums with Reprise Records, including her 1971 masterpiece Blue, she left the label to join the brand-new Asylum Records in 1972. Over the next seven years, Mitchell would record some of the most acclaimed music of her career while changing her musical direction by adding more jazz elements into her songwriting. The evolution culminated in 1979 with Mingus, her collaboration with jazz titan Charles Mingus, and her studio last album for Asylum.

Explore the beginning of that prolific era with THE ASYLUM ALBUMS (1972-1975), the next installment in the Joni Mitchell Archives series. The collection features newly remastered versions of FOR THE ROSES (1972), COURT AND SPARK (1974), the double live album MILES OF AISLES (1974), and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS (1975). All four were recently remastered by Bernie Grundman.

The cover art for THE ASYLUM ALBUMS (1972-1975) features a previously unseen painting by Mitchell. The set also includes an essay by friend and fellow Canadian Neil Young. He writes: “Joni’s music is so deep and transporting. She comes right from the source. There is no mistaking it…For The Roses, Court And Spark, Miles Of Aisles, and The Hissing Of Summer Lawns…are all classics in my book. I listened to every album as it came out. The musicians she played with were always above my abilities. She had grown from folk to jazz and in between, creating a unique kind of sound that I loved to listen to over and over.”

THE ASYLUM ALBUMS (1972-1975) follows Mitchell’s musical evolution over four albums as she embraced more jazz-inspired pieces and moved away from the folk and pop of her early years. It includes essential tracks like her first Top 40 hit, “You Turn Me On, I’m A Radio” and her highest-charting (#7) single “Help Me,” plus favorites like “Free Man In Paris,” “Raised On Robbery” and “In France They Kiss On Main Street.”

FOR THE ROSES, which was released 50 years ago this November, was certified gold and added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2007. Court And Spark topped the U.S. album chart and was certified double platinum, making it the best-selling album of Mitchell’s career. It was nominated for multiple GrammyÒ Awards, including Album of the Year, and won Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist for “Down To You.”

MILES OF AISLES is a double live album that spotlights the tour for Court And Spark. It reached #2 on the album chart and was certified gold. The Hissing Of Summer Lawns was certified gold as well, peaking at #4 on the album chart and earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

All pre-orders will receive an exclusive, limited edition 7” x 10” of the painting on the cover of the box.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0911/5988/8175/files/Slipcase_20Cover_JoniMitchell_AsylumAlbums_1_CD_Cover_aa767f7c-c61c-4b19-bb17-732f78cff3da.jpg?v=1734965040
archives-vol-3-the-asylum-years-1972-1975-4lp
Archives, Vol. 3: The Asylum Years (1972- 1975) (4LP)

Never-Before-Heard Demos, Early & Alternate Versions of Classic Songs, Historical Performances

Book Featuring Photos & Conversation With Joni & Cameron Crowe

Sessions With James Taylor, Neil Young & Tom Scott & the L.A. Fresh off the back-to-back Platinum-certified releases of 1970’s LADIES OF THE CANYON and 1971’s BLUE — totemic albums whose artfulness and ubiquity would influence generations of songwriters — Joni had grown wary of mounting media scrutiny. Everything from her style choices to romantic partners became the subject of far more gossip column inches than were ever dedicated to the lifestyle minutiae of her male counterparts.

In response, she had pulled back, announcing an early retirement from the stage in 1970 and moving to the quiet expanses of British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. It was a fruitful change of scenery. Inspired by her proximity to nature and refreshed by the peaceful seclusion, she began constructing the songs that would become FOR THE ROSES. This respite thrust Mitchell into a remarkably fertile creative period, yielding a run of albums — 1972’s FOR THE ROSES, 1974’s COURT AND SPARK, and 1975’s THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS — that would simultaneously expand and refine the scope of her music. Her adventurous, intricate arrangements and growing formidability as a bandleader injected these songs with a clarity of purpose, a potent muscularity, and a sense of possibility — it is among the most exciting eras of a near peerless career.

This era comes into even greater focus on JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES, VOL. 3: THE ASYLUM YEARS (1972-1975). It’s the latest entry in the GRAMMY-winning series exploring the vast untapped archives of rare Joni recordings — a project guided intimately by Joni's own vision and personal touch. The collection begins with an early cut of “Cold Blue Steel And Sweet Fire,” one of two songs (along with “For The Roses”) test-driven during a visit to a Graham Nash David Crosby recording session at Wally Heider’s in Hollywood.

From there, you'll be treated to early demos and alternate versions from sessions from FOR THE ROSES, COURT & SPARK, and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS; historic live show recordings, including the entirety of Mitchell’s triumphant 1972 return to Carnegie Hall and a definitive gig with her COURT AND SPARK backing band Tom Scott & the L.A. Express; and tracks from sessions cut alongside James Taylor, Graham Nash, and Neil Young.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0911/5988/8175/files/3-2023-JoniM-ProImage-Archives_Vol3_20LP.png?v=1734965059
